American Crime Story Season 3 Will Follow the Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton Scandal – Adweek

FX and Ryan Murphy’s lengthy search for a worthy topic that will be the focus of American Crime Story’s third season has ended.

The network said today that Season 3 of the limited series will focus on the national scandal involving Monica Lewinsky that led to the 1998 impeachment of President Clinton and the country’s first impeachment proceedings in more than a century. Lewinsky will also serve as a producer on the limited series.

Impeachment: American Crime Story will begin production next February and debut Sept. 27, 2020 on FX. The announcement came today at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in L.A.

Beanie Feldstein, who has appeared in Lady Bird, Booksmart and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, will star as Lewinsky.

Sarah Paulson, who will also executive produce, will play Linda Tripp, and Master of Sex’s Annaleigh Ashford (who also appeared in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) will play Paula Jones.

The series will be written by playwright Sarah Burgess and executive produced by the American Crime Story team, including Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. It is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s bestselling book, A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President. Toobin’s The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson was the basis of the first installment of American Crime Story—2016’s The People v. O.J. Simpson, which won nine Emmys and was watched by an average of 12.6 million people across all platforms. The second season, 2018’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace, won seven Emmys.

“FX’s American Crime Story franchise has become a cultural touchstone, providing greater context for stories that deserve greater understanding like the O.J. Simpson trial and saga, and Andrew Cunanan’s tragic crime spree which concluded with the assassination of Gianni Versace,” said FX Networks Chairman John Landgraf in a statement. “This franchise reexamines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant, nuanced and entertaining.”

Landgraf continued, “Impeachment: American Crime Story will likewise explore the overlooked dimensions of the women who found themselves caught up in the scandal and political war that cast a long shadow over the Clinton Presidency.”

FX and Murphy had previously said Season 3 would focus on the tragedy involving Hurricane Katrina, but that project never materialized.
