Facebook to Use Its Platform to Recruit Poll Workers for US Election

Facebook is taking steps to address the shortage of poll workers for the upcoming presidential election, due largely to the pandemic.CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Friday that users in the U.S. over the age of 18 will see messages atop their News Feeds this weekend, leading them to information on how to sign up with their state election authorities to serve as poll workers. Facebook will also offer paid time off to all U.S. employees who wish to volunteer as poll workers.Zuckerberg wrote, “Shortages can lead to hours-long waits at the polls, which makes it harder for people to participate in the democratic process. It is estimated that almost 500,000 poll workers will be needed this year … With Covid affecting our communities, this election will be unlike any other we’ve seen. We are doing everything we can to help as many people as possible register and make their voice heard at the ballot box.”
