NBC Will Air The Tonight Show After Sunday Night Football 5 Times This Fall – Adweek

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is expanding to Sundays—briefly—this fall.

NBC will air five episodes of The Tonight Show this fall, after Sunday Night Football, the network said today at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in L.A.

The first Sunday Tonight Show will air on Sept. 8, after the New England Patriots-Pittsburgh Steelers matchup, with four other telecasts set for Oct. 6, 20, 27 and Dec. 1. All five Tonight Shows will air following late local news.

UPDATE: NBCUniversal said Thursday afternoon that it included some of the new Sunday Tonight Show ad inventory in its recently-completed upfront marketplace, but also held some back for the scatter market.

The Tonight Show’s Sept. 8 guests will include Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan, who star in the upcoming film Just Mercy, along with Kelly Clarkson and singer Kane Brown.

In addition to the Sunday airings, The Tonight Show will also broadcast live the week of Sept. 23, which is the first week of the 2019-20 TV season.

With these high-profile moves, NBC is looking to give the show a boost, after it lost the 18-49 demo race to CBS’ The Late Show last season, for the first time since the 1994-95 season.

Last season, Sunday Night Football was the No. 1 primetime broadcast series in the 18-49 demo, with a 6.1 rating. Even with the local news as a buffer, the NFL games should drive a large audience to those Sunday night Tonight Shows.
